Tenant water-saving awareness: what actually works

Hands cupping water, raising awareness of water saving

Everyone has seen the sticker asking them to turn off the tap. These campaigns start from good intentions, but their effect fades fast. What changes habits for good, with measurements to prove it, is real-time feedback at the precise moment the water is running.

Why conventional campaigns fade

Posters, newsletters, green tips repeated once a year: these actions inform, but at the wrong moment. When the tenant reads the poster, they are not in the shower; when they are in the shower, they have forgotten the poster. Without a reference point at the moment of use, information does not turn into action. That is why the effect drops away after a few weeks.

What works: real-time feedback

The effective lever is to display consumption during the shower. That is the principle behind the Molleaumètre light ring (green, amber, red): residents see where they stand and adjust of their own accord, with no instructions and no constraint.

In the pilot we ran in a student residence with Hénéo, the device cut consumption by 23% per shower and by 15.5% on the main meter (up to 61% among the heaviest users). This is not an isolated finding: an independent University of Surrey study published in the Journal of Travel Research (Pereira-Doel et al., 2024), covering more than 17,500 showers, measured a 25.79% reduction in running time thanks to real-time feedback, around 10 litres saved per shower.

Residents in their own words

The most telling piece of data is not a percentage, it is the vocabulary pilot residents used to describe the device: “a benchmark”, “awareness”, “taking responsibility”. Not “constraint”, not “surveillance”. At the review, every resident surveyed said they would recommend it. That is what separates awareness that lasts from a campaign people simply put up with.

No app, no constraint, anonymised data

The device asks nothing of the resident: no app to install, no account to create. Shower data is anonymised, and flow and pressure stay exactly the same, so comfort does not change. For the manager, it is an awareness programme that runs itself once the Molleaumètres are fitted.

Key takeaway

One-off campaigns fade because they do not act at the moment of use. Real-time feedback during the shower works lastingly: 23% less per shower and 83% reporting a new awareness in the Hénéo pilot (RIVP group, 2025-2026), corroborated by the University of Surrey (25.79% less, 2024), with no constraint and no app. Explore the solution for residences.
